Importance of MEP in Smart Cities

In recent times, Smart Cities have become a buzz word across India and gaining significant prominence and focus. The government is extremely focused on encouraging cities to transform themselves into Smart Cities so it can bolster the economic growth and enhance the lives of its citizens, and to achieve the noble cause adequate funding is also being offered for the selected smart cities. By definition, “A smart city is developed urban area that creates sustainable economic development and high quality of life by excelling in multiple key areas; economy, mobility, environment, people, living, and government. Excelling in these key areas can be done so through strong human capital, social capital, and/or ICT infrastructure.”

Some of the core infrastructure elements in a Smart City include –

  • Affordable housing, high rise buildings, commercial infrastructure

  • Sanitation
  • Efficient urban mobility and public transport

Upon close observation, it is evident to relate the elements of MEP for each of the core infrastructure elements mentioned above. Mechanical branch comprises of three sub areas i.e. Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC).

Plumbing

Estimation of water and no. of fittings for multi commercial building, calculationg pipe sizes, pump heads and equipment sizing for water supply system. Similarly performing the estimation and calculations for waste system, rain water and fire fighting system

Deliver design by drafting in AutoCAD using Single Line Diagram and followed by Double Line diagram

Preparation of Bill of Quantities (BOQ)

Prepare the final project report and get approval
